e’s Panko Breaded Tilapia

The pros:  Trader Joe’s Panko Breaded Tilapia are reasonably priced, heat up well, make for a solidly portioned fish meal and are crisp.

The cons:  When prepared in the oven this product does leak some oil so be prepared to put something under this.

The verdict:  I enjoy the frozen foods section of Trader Joe’s. My household is only two people. On top of that we don’t have work schedules that allow us to eat together most days in the week. Cooking for one is a pain. Plus, I’m the only one in the household who enjoys fish. For me, these are a perfect solution to the occasional fried fish cravings that I get.

For $5.99, I picked up this package of Trader Joe’s Panko Breaded Tilapia Fillets. Inside the box are four individually wrapped precooked fillets. These fillets shouldn’t be microwaved. In order to guarantee that they are crisp, these are to be heated in the oven or toaster oven only. Be sure to use parchment or something under this as a good amount of oil will escape the fillet. In about 20 minutes they are ready. The panko makes a very crisp outside to a not fishy type of fish. The fish is since and firm and flakes nicely when cut up.

Since the fish is so mild, this is a solid choice with tartar sauce, salsa, or any other creative topping that you can think of that goes well with fish. This would also make a fish sandwich which would taste far better than anything McDonalds could make, at a fraction of the cost. Just be aware that if you squeeze some lemon on this, the extra liquid will be absorbed quickly.

Overall, I enjoyed this. This makes a meal without any of the hassle of prep, clean up, or waste. Well done and worth a try. As for me, I’d buy another box and keep these fillets in the freezer to have on hand.

  • Intro: The 4 Worst Things to Buy at Trader Joe’s Recently, on the way to the checkout counter at my local Trader Joe’s, I noticed buckets of irresistible white tulips—ten for $6.99. I’m a cheapskate when it comes to buying flowers, but with guests coming for dinner and a dearth of blooms in my yard, the tulips seemed like a smart splurge. But at home, when I cut open the plastic sleeve for the tulips, five of the stems went limp. There was no rescuing these pathetic beauties, and they collapsed like spent ballerinas around the rim of the vase. I’ve…

Frozen tilapia that has been kept constantly frozen at 0°F will keep safe indefinitely, as long as it has been stored properly and the package is not damaged.

How do you make Trader Joe’s breaded tilapia?

Where does Trader Joe’s fish come from?

Trader Joe’s BBQ Cut Fresh Atlantic Salmon Fillets with Skin are from salmon that have been carefully raised in some of the world’s most pristine salmon farms, at the foot of the Atlantic Ocean in northern Norway.

What is the best tilapia to buy?

If you’re looking for the best choice, we recommend Regal Springs Tilapia. Their fish raised in pristine lakes and are fed a vegetable-based floating feed to ensure supreme quality. While the type of Tilapia you’re eating may not matter to you, the way it’s raised should.

Is tilapia healthier than salmon?

With fewer calories than salmon or other popular fish, Tilapia is the perfect addition to a healthy, balanced diet. Other than being rich in protein, it’s also high in potassium, contains iron and is naturally gluten-free. Tilapia is a lean source of protein that packs a ton of nutrients into one low-carb serving.

While you don’t have to thaw tilapia before you cook it in the oven or deep fryer, or with any other method, it is a good idea. If you cook the tilapia frozen, its cooking time will be approximately 50% longer than the recommended time for fully thawed, but cooking it this way will be safe.

Is Trader Joe’s frozen fish good?

The trout fillets were real thin so it was hard to separate from the skin. A couple bites were strong but the rest was very mild and had a nice taste of lemon and dill. If you are not a fan of fish skin, these might be too thin for you. Altogether it was an easy and good, but not great, weeknight dinner.

Is fish good at Trader Joe’s?

Just about every grocery store sells frozen fish, but I’m convinced Trader Joe’s has the best quality and prices around. First of all, they have just about every fish and shellfish your heart can desire, from crab meat, to shrimp, to langostino, which is a fancy term for the meat of a squat lobster.

What is the healthiest frozen fish to buy?

White fish such as hoki or tarakihi has lots of omega-3, and oily fish such as salmon or tuna has even more. We recommend choosing products with 200mg or more omega-3 per 100g.

Worst: King Mackerel

But king mackerel — especially ones caught in the Pacific Ocean — are high in mercury. Doctors say young children and women who are pregnant or nursing should avoid them completely.

What is the safest frozen fish to buy?

Steer clear of naturally oily frozen fish

“Oily fish such as yellowtail or some tuna generally don’t freeze well, and even salmon can suffer if frozen too long,” Harris said. Harris recommended opting for frozen pacific cod, tilapia, catfish, swordfish, walleye, pacific halibut, or pollack instead.
