My husband got me a subscription to Universal Yums for Christmas, and every month I get a box delivered with snacks from a different country. One of the first couple of boxes I received contained snacks from the Netherlands, and it included stroopwafels.

Literally meaning “syrup waffle,” a stroopwafel is made of two thin baked wafers with a caramel filling. It looks a like a waffle but is thin, and it’s crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. It’s often enjoyed by placing it on top of a hot mug of coffee or tea for a few minutes to soften it, resulting in a warm and gooey caramel center.

My family enjoyed our stroopwafels from Universal Yums, and I thought I might pick some up the next time I saw them at Aldi, which occasionally sells them as limited-time specials. Then, on my most recent trip to Aldi’s cousin Trader Joe’s, I found these mini stroopwafels.

Daelmans Stroopwafels Minis cost $2.79 for a 7.04-ounce package at the time of publication (about 40 cents an ounce).

Daelmans is a family bakery in the Netherlands that’s been around since 1904, and their products are not exclusive to Trader Joe’s. I found full-sized (not mini) Daelmans stroopwafels at Target and Walmart for about 35 cents per ounce, so Trader Joe’s may not always have the lowest price on Daelmans products. I also found various Daelmans stroopwafels on Amazon. Depending on where you buy them, you can also get them not just in the original caramel flavor but also in chocolate, honey, coffee, and maple flavors.

Before going any further here, I should say that mini stroopwafels have a disadvantage over full-sized ones. That’s because at less than two inches in diameter, you can’t really put these mini ones on top of a hot drink mug to warm them. This package of minis says you can enjoy them “with friends, on the go or with a nice warm cup of coffee or tea!” Just keep in mind you won’t be able to eat them in the traditional way . . . unless you’re using cups from your kids’ kitchen playset. They’re still good for dunking in coffee or tea, though.

Meanwhile, a Daelmans’ standard-sized stroopwafel looks to be just over three inches in diameter, and their website talks about how you “warm it up on your cup.” So what size you prefer — and where you buy your stroopwafels from — depends on how you want to eat them.

With that said, these are manufactured in the Netherlands and are made with certified sustainable palm oil, and they also are suitable for vegetarians.

Ingredients are: wheat flour, glucose syrup, butter, sugar, palm oil, molasses, soy flour, canola oil, wheat dextrin, salt, soy lecithin, baking soda, cinnamon, citric acid, vanilla bean, and mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids.

If you’re avoiding allergens, these contain wheat, milk, and soy.

The package contains about six servings, with four waffles making up one serving. A serving has 140 calories, 7 grams of total fat (11% DV), 4 grams of saturated fat (20% DV), 10 mg of cholesterol (3% DV), 80 mg (3% DV), 20 grams of total carbohydrates (7% DV), no dietary fiber, 10 grams of added sugars (20% DV), and 1 gram of protein.

As for how these taste, my family didn’t mind that these are in miniature form, and this bag didn’t last long in our house. They are everything we expect stroopwafels to be — crispy on the outside and chewy and sweet on the inside.

The Verdict:

Daelmans Stroopwafels Minis are a product of the Netherlands and the brand is not exclusive to Trader Joe’s. A stroopwafel consists of two thin cookie wafers with a chewy caramel filling, and it’s a traditional treat in the Netherlands. You can place a standard-sized stroopwafel on top of a hot mug of coffee or tea for a few minutes to warm and soften it before eating, but these mini stroopwafels would just fall in your cup. The good news is that you can also eat them right out of the bag without warming them, and either way they’re very good and worth trying.
