the Best Bacon? Pre-Cooked Bacon Reviews
Bacon is a delicious delicacy.
A Short History of Bacon
According to Bacon Wiki, bacon refers to any pork in general. In the Roman Era, there was a dish composed of boiled pig meat and spices. It wasn’t until 1924 that Oscar Meyer produced a pre-sliced package of meat that is similar to what we eat today.
The phrase “bring home the bacon” comes from the 12th century when a church in Dunmow, England, offered a side of bacon to any man who could swear before God and the congregation that he had not fought or quarreled with his wife for a year and a day. Any man that could “bring home the bacon” was highly respected in his community.

Price: $3.99–$5.99
Most of us are pretty familiar with the Hormel name. They’ve been synonymous with meats since the company was founded in the 1890s. Known in particular for pork products and canned meats, Hormel is ranked number 6 according to Food Business News (2018).
How does their bacon rank?
Well, there are those that swear by the name, claiming that their fresh bacon is one of the best. I’ve tried that too, and I have to honestly disagree.
This product had a very distinct taste that was a bit salty. Most Hormel products I’ve tried taste basically the same to me. I’m not sure if there is a seasoning particular to the brand or if it is in the preservatives, but I would caution against eating too much of this product.
The texture itself was just banal, for lack of a better word. I didn’t experience any of that bacon zest that I usually enjoy. The pieces were wafer thin as well, but even if pre-prepared bacon came in thick cut, I don’t think that would matter.

Market Pantry (Target)
Price: $3.99
Pieces: 15 slices
This bacon really isn’t all that bad. It feels a little greasy, though, when you take it out of the package. The slices are small, thin, and rather flimsy. They cook up in about thirty seconds to one minute.
The bacon is crispy and flavorful and tastes just as good as what you expect from bacon. The slices, though, are thinner and not very filling. I think that it would take two of these strips just to make what you would get from one normal slice.
They have a nice delicate crisp to them and, with the slightly smoky flavor, make them a good candidate for breakfast meat.
And for the price, it’s pretty well worth it.

Oscar Meyer
Price: $3.99–$6.99
This is pretty good bacon. Nice taste, the right amount of crispiness, and is almost as good as cooked fresh.
The samples appear natural and make a great addition to any breakfast plate. One of my top choices. It doesn’t leave much grease behind either, which is still a problem with some pre-cooked bacon samples.
They are small pieces and hit the spot when you are in the mood for some quick bacon.

Great Value (Walmart)
Price: $3.99–$5.99
One of the better varieties out there with nice, crisp strips with an authentic taste. When cooked in the microwave, the pieces don’t come out too greasy. The portion sizes are standard, and they produce a pleasant aroma.
Great side for any breakfast dish or to top your favorite sandwich or burger.
One of the better choices for the price. You really can’t go wrong with this one. There are better options out there—such as bacon that needs to be cooked. But this will satisfy you and is probably one of the cheaper selections available.

Probably one of my favorites so far. The strips cook up nicely when heated, although a little greasy. They have a full, crisp, smoky flavor, and the thickness is just right. Portion sizes are small—you get about ten strips in a package. And the strips themselves are fairly thin.
Sometimes thinner is better. This cooks up nice and crisp if you like your bacon crispy.
Well, about Hormel – their brand usually has a distinct taste that reminds me of preservatives and piles of salt. Hormel has been around for a long time, having been founded in Minnesota, I believe, in the 1890s. They have quite a few various products out there, from packaged meats to canned chilies.
Their food, to me, has always been a bit of a staple, although I find their quality mediocre compared to some other brands out there, like Tyson, Oscar Meyer, or local store brands.
Their bacon product will serve you right, although, as I mentioned, it isn’t my favorite. Considering the price, you are probably better off going with a local store brand. When cooked in the microwave, there were piles of grease on each side, and it took several blottings with a paper towel in order to soak it off.
The slices themselves are pretty generous and look like real bacon strips. You do get the thick-cut strips that are advertised and they will complement your breakfast.

Pre-Cooked Bacon Saves Time and Cleanup
Pre-cooked bacon is an option when you don’t want to cook bacon raw and want to avoid a lot of grease. That is probably the greatest downside of fresh bacon. You have lots of mess to worry about, regardless if you fry it, bake it in the oven, or choose the microwave.
Also, with these products, all you have to do is warm them up. In many cases, you can eat them right out of the package.
There are many other options to choose from besides the ones mentioned above, but these are some of the more common choices you might find in your local market.
Please feel free to add any comments or send me any suggestions. Thank you.

The excess fat from the bacon will slowly render in the boiling water as it heats up, so be sure to cover it just enough. Once the water has completely boiled off, lower the heat to medium and fry the bacon in its own grease, turning it frequently to ensure even cooking.
