  • Soy sauce – go with low sodium and use tamari for the gluten-free version.
  • Rice vinegar – balances the flavor nicely, by adding a light tanginess.
  • Fresh garlic – we try to go with freshly minced garlic, as it tastes so much better than canned or powder.
  • Fresh ginger – being a Chinese dish, this is one of the main ingredients. Plus, it brings a nice flavor to it.
  • Sweetener – this is optional, but we always use it, as it balances the heat nicely. Feel free to use brown sugar, honey, or maple syrup. Just make sure to taste and adjust based on your preference.
  • Cornstarch it thickens the sauce for dipping.
  • Szechuan peppercorns  – if you cannot find some, use black or red peppercorns or for a spicier kick some crushed red chilies. Another option would be to add some chili peppers if you can handle the heat.
  • Asian chili garlic sauce or chili bean sauce –  or feel free to use anything from Tabasco or Sriracha or any other hot sauce. However, we really enjoy the flavor of chili garlic sauce in this recipe.
  • Seasonings – this is optional, but we use to add some Chinese five-spice powder, and crushed red pepper flakes.
  • Sesame seeds or Chili flakes – to garnish.

What flavor is McDonald’s Szechuan?

McDonald’s describes the flavor as “savory and soy-forward,” which is probably similar to your preferred wonton dipping sauce.

Why does Szechuan cause tongue numbness?

Similar to capsaicin, a substance in Sichuan peppercorns known as hydroxy-alpha-sanshool binds to receptors in your tongue and tricks your brain into thinking there is a “tingly” sensation.

Is kung pao hotter than Szechuan?

Szechuan chicken is more spicy and isn’t sweet or nutty, whereas Kung pao chicken is mildly spicy, sweet, and nutty. Because these two dishes are so similar, many people mistake them for one another.

Is Szechuan always spicy?

The most commonly used spices you can find in most households and eateries are “The Five Fragrances” which consist of fennel, pepper, aniseed, cinnamon, and clove; chili and Sichuan pepper.

Similar to General Tso, is Szechuan?

Does Szechuan give you a tingly mouth feeling?

For what reason was Szechuan pepper illegal?

Given that the tree is in the same family, Rutaceae, as the genus Citrus, the United States Food and Drug Administration prohibited the importation of Sichuan peppercorns from 1968 to 2005. This was because it was discovered that the peppercorns could spread citrus canker.

Is eating spicy food healthy?

The bottom line: If you like spicy food, promising research suggests that spices and peppers that contain the chemical capsaicin can be beneficial to your health, including enhancing the microbiome in your gut, potentially lowering blood pressure, enhancing levels of good cholesterol, and even boosting your metabolism.

What should I drink after eating something spicy?

Drinking or eating something acidic, such as lemonade, limeade, orange juice, or a tomato-based food item or drink, may also help cool your mouth down. (Milk is also acidic, by the way.) Balancing it with an acid can help neutralize the molecule’s activity.

Why is Szechuan cuisine so hot?

Sichuan peppercorns are the dried citrus berries of the prickly ash tree, and they produce sensations unlike anything you’ll experience from a standard black peppercorn. Sichuan peppercorns contain a molecule known as hydroxy-alpha sanshool, which is thought to be the reason for the numbing and tingling sensations on your tongue.
