Swanson Bone Broth Review

Can you trust a microwavable bone broth with 500 mg sodium per serving that uses natural flavors? Read an honest Swanson Bone Broth review from someone who knows exactly what to look for in a traditionally made product.

I know what I’m talking about because I’ve personally made over 250,000 L of bone broth in the last 6 years. I can tell you exactly what any brand is trying to do by looking at the ingredients they use and the nutrition facts.

Is Swanson’s a good pick for you? Read below and get all the information you need to make the best decision for your health. You’ll learn what some of the strange ingredients they use do to your body.

Let me mention one thing briefly before we begin: if you want a higher quality alternative with more collagen protein and less sodium, give Bluebird Provisions a try.

This brand uses one simple ingredient and has more protein and less sodium than Swanson’s.

What are the benefits of drinking bone broth?

Drinking bone broth is a great way to improve your overall health and wellness. It helps strengthen your immune system system, build stronger skin, hair, teeth and nails, builds resilient joints (arthritis), helps you sleep, gut health and can help control your blood sugar.

Store bought bone broth is not always good for you because they are laced with preservatives, cheap filler proteins, artificial sweeteners, natural flavors and yeast extracts.

You need a real one that is full of amino acids like glycine, proline, glutamine and glucosamine in order to reap the rewards of these nutrients.

What is Swanson Bone Broth?

Swanson Bone Broth is a shelf-stable stock made by Campbells Soup Company that you can find in grocery stores throughout the USA. It comes in single serve microwavable cups for ease of use.

They make chicken, beef, rosemary lemon and turmeric ginger products that are available at almost every grocery store across the USA. They use tons of promotions and sales to get people to try it. You can also find it online on Amazon.

Are these products really bone broth? Should you add them to your pantry or diet? Let’s dive in and answer all of your pressing questions. Review sites don’t give you a clear picture of what is going on because they just aggregate other data points.

What are the key ingredients in Swanson bone broths?

The key ingredients in Swanson bone broth are beef stock, natural flavoring, salt, carrots, cabbage, celery, onions, water, and tomato paste. They also have traces of wheat and soy in some products.

They do a good job using real vegetables and bone broth in the chicken versions. This is what you’d expect from such a large company. Let’s look at each one in detail.

There are no chicken bones or beef bones, which is sometimes a concern. This means that they are using a stock or broth from another product or one they have already made themselves or bought another company and using it in their products.

Beef Bone Broth Ingredient List

Here are the ingredients in Swanson’s Sipping Beef Bone Broth:

Beef bone stock, natural flavoring, salt, carrots, cabbage, celery, onions, parsley, garlic extract, soy lecithin, thyme extract. May contain traces of wheat. Contains soy.

You can see some of them are a bit strange for this product type and warrant a deeper explanation. Scroll down for why these things are in this product.

Swansons Bone Broth Sipping Chicken Ingredients

You can find the following ingredients in Swanson’s chicken bone broth:

Chicken bone broth, carrots, cabbage, celery, onions, salt, tomato paste, parsley, thyme. May contain traces of wheat.

Ingredients to be Aware of

Swanson’s uses some good ingredients, but are a few that raises questions. I am a bit confused why some of these things are in bone broth as I’ve never seen it before.

Natural Flavoring

This is the second ingredient in the beef broth, which means that there are more of this than any other ingredient except for beef stock.

You just don’t see this in most traditionally made products. Only big brands tend to resort to this ingredient to add flavor and perhaps mask other unwanted flavors.

The only other product I’ve come across that uses this is Dr. Kellyann’s bone broth. So what is it?

It’s a flavoring agent that comes in liquid extract or powder form used in processed meat products like sausages, burgers and fake meat. It enhances meat taste and gives them that irresistible umami flavor.

The problem is that there is nothing natural about them. They are usually made from yeast extracts which are GMO and heavily processed.

Beef Stock

Beef stock is concentrated and reduced broth that is commonly used by large food companies. There isn’t a ton to say about it. You generally want your bone broth to say ‘bone broth’ or ‘bones’ as the first ingredient on the list. This one does not.

Salt

Common addition to any bone broth. You really need a bit of saltiness to bring out the tasting notes. However, in the beef version, you can see that it is the third ingredient. This is why it has 500 mg per serving.

Low sodium bone broth powder

Soy Lecithin

Soy lecithin is a controversial food additive used in processed products made from soy. It’s used to emulsify ingredients together or as a lubricant. Some companies have found it to be useful in enhancing tasting notes.

Some people with extreme soy allergies may be sensitive to it, so be careful and avoid this product if you are.

Garlic Extract

Simply a cheaper version of real garlic. Not a ton to be concerned with unless you are on a strict, whole foods, diet or are sensitive to FODMAPS.

The remaining vegetables on the list seem fine.

What’s missing?

There is a glaring omission of any animal bones or chicken bones on the package. They use pre-made concentrated stock or broth to make these products instead of bones.

What do customers say about Swanson’s bone broth?

Customers have both good and bad things to say about Swanson’s bone broth. The reviews run the gamut from 1 to 5 stars and everything in between.

Some are concerned with the weak flavor of the plain chicken version while others mentioned how the lid leaks when they drink from it.

How does Swanson Bone Broth compare to other brands?

Swanson bone broth has more natural flavors, artificial extracts, soy and salt than you see in a typical product that uses a low and slow simmer and whole food ingredients.

For the sake of this exercise, I’ll compare them to another popular brand online and on Amazon: Bluebird Provisions.

Swanson bone broth vs Bluebird Provisions Powder

The first thing we need to do is convert both brands to a 250 ml or one cup serving size. For Swanson’s Beef, we had to reduce their typical serving size to make things equal. Otherwise, we can’t make fair comparisons.

You’ll notice that Bluebird has has 150% more protein and 3 times less sodium compared to Swanson’s. They also have zero carbs compared to 2 g.

This may not seem like a big deal, but carbs can add up quickly if you are on a keto diet or low carb.

Swanson Ingredients Compared to Other Brands

Swanson uses decent ingredients but with a few glaring question marks. Namely the natural flavoring, salt, garlic extract, and soy lecithin.

Let’s compare that list to Bluebird Provisions and see what we find.

Swanson's ingredient list compared to the best powdered brand

Bluebird Provisions Ingredient Highlights

Bluebird Provisions Bone Broth uses a single source of protein and single ingredient: chicken bone broth. No added sodium or anything else. This lets the real flavor speak for itself.

The potent amino acids in this powder are everything you need to build collagen and live longer.

Eco Friendly Packaging

Bluebird Provisions Bone Broth is the most environmentally sustainable bone broth on the market. It comes in a 100% recyclable zip pouch.

The Swanson Bone Broth comes in recyclable packaging as well, just be sure to follow the instructions on how to do so.

Is Swanson Bone Broth Safe?

Swanson bone broth is safe as long as you understand the ingredients and ensure that you are not allergic or sensitive to any of these ingredients. Also make sure that you follow the heating instructions on the package to heat it properly and avoid any spills or messes.

What is the price of Swanson Bone Broth?

The price of Swanson bone broth is $18.88 per 8 pack / case on Amazon. This works out to $2.36 per serving. While some customers complain about the cost, this is a pretty good price. Please note: this is only the price on Amazon at the time of this writing. There may be changes or it may be different in your local store.

Swanson Bone Broth Review: Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a bone broth that is high in protein and low in sodium, Swanson Bone Broth is not the best option because of the 460-500 mg per serving.

While it’s a convenient choice and uses a great microwave safe package, there are great options with more protein and less salt.

Bluebird Provisions Bone Broth Powder is a good option if you’re looking for convenience and shelf stability. It has a two year shelf like, has 12 g protein and only 130 mg sodium per serving.

Guests absolutely rave about the flavor and mixability of this product. You can find it on Amazon or on their website linked above.
