According to Sonia, they’re using vegetable oil, but 5 days earlier Patti says “beef tallow”
Popeyes’ fries the way things are supposed to be fried, in LARD! None of this we-pretend-to-be-healthy-but-really-crazy-bad-for-you soybean oil. Give me honest lard over solvent-extracted soybean oil any day — regardless of the allergies!
When we first started reviewing their menu, we figured they were just playing the same game that KFC plays by claiming that since it’s ONLY fried in soybean oil, it doesn’t contain soy. We must have seemed extremely incredulous since the employee then brought out a big ol’ box of lard to show us what they actually fry in.
My kids have gotten to eat their first fried chicken since we’ve learned about their soybean allergies. It was our 3 year old daughter’s first taste of fried chicken in her life!
Even better! They roll their corn on the cob in real, honest to goodness, butter — the milk and salt as the only ingredients type of butter, none of that really-it’s-better-for-you-but-it’s-mainly-just-cheaper-for-us margarine.
Our kids are in heaven, fried chicken and corn on the cob — our kids are the only kids in America that are tired of McDonald’s because so far that’s been one of the few fast-food restaurants where we can actually get a meal for them.
One warning, Popeye’s nutrition / allergy information isn’t 100% correct. The Cajun fries are supposed to be soy-free, but there is actually soybean oil in them. Everything else seemed to be accurate.
The chicken (not the nuggets) and the corn is about all they can have — the mashed potatoes, the fried shrimp, the onion rings, pretty much everything else has soy in it, but we’ll take what we can get.
Extra thanks to the ever helpful Robert and company who made multiple trips to check ingredients. It was their watchful eye that caught the soybean oil in the Cajun fries. At that point I was ready to take the allergen information at face value (They had me at “lard”) but they were still checking thing even when we weren’t asking.
So, if you have a soybean allergy, stop by the Popeyes in Seville say “Hi!” to Robert and company, they’ll take care of you.
