As part of Panera Bread’s commitment to providing cleaner food options, the chain is promoting that its breakfast sandwiches are made with 100 percent real eggs. If you’re thinking, wait, what were they serving before?, you might not like what you’re about to hear — at least not about the food industry at large.
When you order an egg sandwich at a fast food restaurant, there’s a huge chance you’re getting something that’s partially an egg, but also a lot of other things. (Case in point: check out this breakdown of major chains’ ingredient listings from NorthJersey.com.) Soybean oil, xantham gum, whey, butter flavor, citric acid, and many more ingredients that are harder to pronounce find their way into the “egg” portion of a bacon-egg-and-cheese. Panera has always served an actual egg in its sandwiches, but given how many competitors’ eggs contain five ingredients or more, the brand thought it was high time it let the world know.
Many breakfast sandwiches arrive to fast food locations frozen and are reheated before being served, making additives necessary to preserve things like color and flavor. It makes sense, but it’s also impressive that Panera is switching up the status quo.
Panera’s new sandwiches will come with an extra-large, freshly cracked egg cooked to order. They come over-easy, but you can ask for them to be made however you’d like (fried, scrambled, etc.).
The new sandwiches include Bacon, Egg, and Cheese; Sausage, Egg, and Cheese; Steak and Egg; and Ham, Egg, and Cheese. They’re served on Brioche or whole grain bread ,and you can customize them by adding toppings like avocado, spinach, and tomato, as well as new sauces like sweet maple, basil pesto, and chipotle aioli. All of the ingredients offered for the new sandwich are free of artificial sweeteners, flavors, and preservatives.
These sandwiches are replacing the Mediterranean breakfast sandwich and bacon egg and cheese on a bagel, both of which were recently taken off Panera’s menu.
In order to promote transparency in the food industry, Panera announced today the company is petitioning the Food and Drug Administration to clearly define “egg,” as there are not currently any specific guidelines. Panera’s suggested definition is “freshly prepared, cracked shell eggs and/or egg whites with no additives.”
Panera tested the new breakfast items in select markets back in November, and they’re available nationwide as of this week.
