n & Dairy-Free Review Blog: Dewey’s Pizza Review
The last of my reviews from my recent visit to Cincinnati is Dewey’s Pizza, a regional chain pizza company that has gluten-free offerings.
Pizza is among the trickiest of foods to navigate when dining out gluten-free because there are so many moving parts. From the oven, to the utensils (pizza cutter, sauce ladle), to the free-flying flour in the kitchen, so few restaurants understand the nuance and importance of doing right by their gluten-free parsons.
I’m happy to report that Dewey’s is not one of those restaurants, and does care about gluten-free diners. While not a dedicated restaurant, they do take precautions, and have a 12″ pizza that ensures those with celiac or intolerances don’t miss out on the fun of pizza night.
Before dining out, I reached out to Dewey’s on Twitter, and they responded to help me learn more about their gluten-free pizzas. The gluten-free crusts used are vegan, egg-free, dairy-free and soy-free, and was told the full ingredient list is as follows:
Water, Rice Flour, Modified Rice Starch, Potato Starch, Evaporated Cane Sugar, Tapioca Flour, Potato Flour, Fresh Yeast, NGMO Canola Olive Oil Blend, Salt, Xanthan Gum, Calcium Sulfate (added for freshness).
When ordering, make sure to let the staff know that your order is an allergy, which lets the kitchen know to use separate utensils and to use unused sauces and toppings which have not been cross contaminated. I noted that allergy orders are noted on the receipt, since I ordered for takeout. The crust is cooked in a tin it comes in, which prevents cross contamination in the oven, but diners should know that the kitchen does have flour in it at all times.
In addition to gluten-free dieters, Dewey’s can accommodate other allergies as well as vegans, but they do not have vegan cheese on hand for those who cannot have dairy.
Gluten-free pizzas only come in one size- 12.” I found the size perfectly sized for sharing, or in my case, a pizza for one.
I ordered the killer veggie (sans cheese), which comes topped with red onion, green pepper, black onion, tomatoes, mushrooms, and parsley. The abundance and variety of toppings certainly made up for the lack of cheese, in my opinion. Robust and flavorful, the pizza sauce added a nice base to support the veggies on top. The crust was sturdy and had a nice crunchiness on the outer rim.
For me, the gold standard of pizza is Neopolitan style, and Dewey’s is more Americanized than that. However, as gluten-free pizzas go, this one was better than most, and I liked how they have different checkpoints and protocols to ensure the pizza is safe.
Overall Deweys is definitely a notable restaurant, and since it’s a chain, they have several locations for convenience. Their pizzas come in many gourmet flavor combinations and there’s also a build-your-own option as well. My gluten-eating family love their pizzas, so it was nice to be able to feel included in the family pizza party with minimal fuss.
