So just to be clear: everyone agrees dressing made with a raw egg can sit in the fridge 24 hours before going into the oven? My MIL did it that way her entire life. Now I live in fear.

I have made my entire stuffing recipe the day before for many years and have had no issues ever! I refrigerate it immediately after putting it together in a big plastic bowl with a tightly sealed cover. I take it out in the morning when I am ready to put the turkey in the oven. I do have some “diehard” family members who want some stuffing baked in the turkey so I clean the turkey well as always with salt and rinse well, pat dry, and loosely stuff. In the oven the turkey goes. Remaing stuffing goes in the crockpot with some chicken or turkey broth. I do check it to see if more both is needed and add accordingly. (I used to bake it in the oven years ago but it can get too dry so now I use the crockpot to cook and then keep warm during the meal.). As soon as dinner is over, it gets refrigerated, and we use it for heated leftovers or cold sandwiches. It never lasts long enough to go bad – It’s been a family favorite for many years and the change to the crockpot (from baking in the oven) makes it even more popular because it’s not dry! I get calls from family members verifying that, regardless of who is hosting (making) Thanksgiving dinner, I am making that “awesome stuffing.” Have a great Thanksgiving and enjoy your wonderful family dinner!

Frequently Asked Questions About can you put uncooked stuffing in the fridge

If you have questions that need to be answered about the topic can you put uncooked stuffing in the fridge, then this section may help you solve it.

How long should stuffing be refrigerated before cooking?

3–4 days

How long does homemade stuffing stay fresh in the refrigerator?

This same timing applies to stuffing that is cooked separately; it can be refrigerated for up to three or four days, or frozen for longer storage.

How long does raw stuffing stay fresh?

To extend the shelf life of stuffing mix after the package has been opened, transfer the stuffing mix to a covered airtight container or place the original stuffing mix bag in a resealable plastic freezer bag.

Before baking, can stuffing sit outside?

The important thing is to keep it properly chilled so that bacteria won’t have a chance to grow in it. You haven’t stated whether you are going to cook the stuffing inside the bird or outside, but it’s fine to make almost any stuffing a few hours before you’ll need it.

Can I make the stuffing the day before?

This recipe leans even more heavily on the day before, which is great for a few reasons. Most stuffing recipes can be made at least partially in advance: often assembled the day before and then baked off twice (once with foil to cook through, then without for a crispy top) on Thanksgiving Day.

Why can’t you prepare the stuffing in advance?

If you intend to serve the stuffing inside the body cavity of the turkey, you shouldn’t cook your stuffing ahead of time, according to the Food Safety and Inspection Service, a division of the United States Department of Agriculture.

Can I prepare my salad the night before?

Bread Dressing: I prepare my bread dressing one to two days in advance, store it in the refrigerator unbaked, and bake it just before serving.

Does the stuffing need to be cooked right away?

Reheating Stuffing You’ll do all the hands-on work: cubing and drying out the bread, cooking the vegetables and aromatics, and tossing them with the eggs and broth.

Stuffing may be allowed to sit overnight.

I like to add the broth in two stages, which I find helpful for two reasons: first, letting the stuffing sit overnight allows the herb flavors to sink into the bread, making the flavor even and delicious. This make-ahead Thanksgiving stuffing actually turns out better when prepared in advance.
